Onethingisperfectlyclear.Itisnotdonebytheofferingofanyfreshsacrifice.ThiswasthechiefdutyoftheJewishpriests,butitformsnopartofthatoftheChristianminister.FromoneendoftheNewTestamenttothep.56otheryoucanfindnoallusiontoanysuchthingasaChristiansacrificeforsin.TheonesacrificeoftheLordJesusChristwasonceandforever,final,complete,andsufficientforallthesinsofthewholeworld.Theworkofsacrificeisfinished,aswearetaughtinthewords,“Towit,thatGodwasinChristreconcilingtheworlduntohimself;”andiftherecanbenosacrifice,itisperfectlyplainthattherecanbenosacrificingpriest.NorcantheideabegatheredfromthePrayer-bookanymorethanitcanfromtheNewTestament.Thereisnotanallusionthere,eithertoasacrificeorasacrificingpriest,exceptwhereitsays,inArt.xxxi.,“Thesacrificesofmasses,inthewhichitwascommonlysaidthatthepriestdidofferChristforthequickandthedead,tohaveremissionofpainorguilt,wereblasphemousfablesanddangerousdeceits.”ThereisnoChristiansacrificerecognisedbytheChurchofEnglandbutthethankfuldedicationofheartandlifeonthepartofthosewhohavebeensavedbythesacrificeoftheLord.Butthissacrificerequiresnopriesttoofferit.Itmayriseatanymoment,andfromanyplace,fromthedepthsofanythankfulheart.Thus,accordingtoourCommunionService,allofferp.57ittogether,andthewholecongregationhavingtogethermetaroundtheirFather’stable,andtogethertastedthejoysoftheirFather’slove,togetherbringtheirsacrifice,andsay,“Hereweofferandpresentuntothee,OLord,ourselves,oursoulsandbodies,tobeareasonable,holy,andlivingsacrificeuntothee.”“Butthisman,afterhehadofferedonesacrificeforsinsforever,satdownontherighthandofGod.”

ItisscarcelyneedfultopointouttheunceasingrepetitionoftheJewishsacrifices.Notonlyweretheyofferedontheoccasionofeveryspecialfault,buteveryperiodoftimewasmarkedbythem.Theday,theweek,themonth,theyear—eachhaditsappointedsacrifice.Notaday,norevenanight,passedwithoutsin,andthereforetherewasasacrificeeachmorningforthesinsofthenight,andanothereacheveningforthoseoftheday.(Exod.xxix.38-40.)Notaweekpassedwithoutaddingitsquotatotheaccumulatingguiltofthesinner,and,therefore,notwithstandingthedailysacrifices,therewasanotherburnt-offeringinthemorningofeveryp.20sabbath.(Num.xxviii.9,10.)But,notwithstandingallthis,sin,andtheguiltofit,stillgatheredaroundthepeople,sothatatthebeginningofeachmonththerewas,inaddition,amonthlyburnt-offeringuntotheLord:“theburnt-offeringofeverymonththroughthemonthsoftheyear.”(Ibid.11,14.)Butsingatheredstill.Lambafterlambwasbroughttothealtar,butitseemedasthoughnothingcouldsatisfy:foreveryyear,onthetenthdayoftheseventhmonth,therewasthegreatdayofatonementforsin;andofthesolemnsacrificesofthatgreatdayitwassaid,“Thisshallbeaneverlastingstatuteuntoyou,tomakeanatonementforthechildrenofIsraelforalltheirsinsoncea-year.”(Lev.xvi.34.)Thus,dayafterday,weekafterweek,monthaftermonth,yearafteryear,therewasanunceasingsystemofperpetualsacrifice.Therewasnoendtotheunceasingsheddingofblood.Sometimesthevictimwasabullock,sometimesaram,sometimesagoat,sometimesalamb,andsometimesapairofturtle-doves.Buttherewasalwaysasacrifice.Thereweretwoeveryday,andsometimesmanymore,besidesthosewhichwereofferedforspecialsins.

Weliveinveryanxioustimes.Differentphasesoferrorarefollowingeachotherwithgreatrapidity,likewavesbeforethegaleonastormysea.Averyshorttimeagoweweredeeplydistressedbythescepticaltendenciesofcertainablewriters,—tendenciesstillinrapidprogress,thoughpublicattentionhasbeenrecentlydirectedintoanotherchannel.NowwearestartledbytheopendeclarationofRomishdoctrine,andopenpracticeofRomishceremonial,bymenwhohaveacceptedofficeinachurchwhichdeclarestheseverydoctrinestobe“blasphemousfablesanddangerousdeceits.”Ithasbecome,therefore,absolutelynecessarythatwep.4shouldunderstandthereasonswhytheChurchofEnglandhasseparatedfromthatofRome,andwhyitisthatweraiseourvoiceagainsttheseinnovations.Iamwellawarethatsuchasubjectisdistastefultomanyminds.Someshrinkfromthetroubleofcontroversy,andwouldratherhavetheirwholeattentionfixedonthatwhichtheyfindhelpfultotheirownsouls.Othersthinkituncharitable;andmaintainthat,providedapersonbeconscientiousinhispractice,weneedfeelnoanxietyaboutthetruthorerrorofhiscreed.ButIampersuadedthatitwillnotdosotodealwithtruth.Thesearedaysinwhichwemustknowwhatwebelieve,andwhywebelieveit.Ifwedesiretostandfast,wemustknowourstanding-ground.AndifwedesiretoseeouryoungpeoplegrowingupaswitnessesfortheLordJesusChrist,wemustnotmerelystrivetocallforthinthemareligionoffeeling,butmusttraintheminsoundScripturalprinciples,thattheymaybeabletogiveananswertoeveryonewhoaskeththemareasonofthehopethatisinthem.TheRomishquestionisforceduponusbytheenormouseffortswhichtheChurchofRomeismakingfortherecoveryofitsancientsupremacyinEngland;andImustsay,andsayitwiththep.5deepestgriefandhumiliation,Ifearwehavebeenbetrayed,inmanycases,bymenwho,asclergymenoftheChurchofEngland,havepledgedthemselvestotheveryprinciplestheyarebetraying.Itishightime,therefore,thatweshouldunderstandthegroundofoursolemnprotestagainstRome,andthatweshouldnotmerelystudytruthinitssimplicity,butstudyitlikewiseinitsoppositiontoRomisherror.Ipurpose,however,Godhelpingme,todirectyourthoughtsthismorningtoonepointofthecontroversy.Icannotattemptthemanypointsonwhichweareatissue.Iconfinemyself,therefore,toone;andthatis,theteachingofthewordofGodwithreferencetoourexaltedSaviour,inoppositiontotheteachingofRomeinthedoctrineoftransubstantiation.MaytheLorddirectourstudies,andwriteHisowntruthmostdeeplyonourhearts!

Nor,again,isthissacrificethemeanswherebythegreatsacrificeisappliedtothesoul.Thisp.41isamorecommonideathantheother,andoneprevailingamongmanywhoarethoroughlyopposedtoPopery.ItisinharmonywithhumannaturetosupposethatwemustmakeoursacrificeinordertogainashareoftheblessingsofHis.Thuspeoplewillsometimesgiveup,firstonething,andthenanother,hopingbythesesacrificestofindpeacethroughthebloodofatonementoftheLordJesusChrist.TheyhavenoideaofbeingsavedthroughanythingbutthegreatsacrificeoftheLordJesusChrist;buttheyconsiderthattheymustmaketheirsacrificeinordertosecuretheapplicationofhisworktothemselves.Thisistheprincipleofalmostallself-imposedmortifications.Peoplehopethroughthemtobepartakersofreconciliationthroughthegreatatonement.Yetnoneofthesethingssatisfythesoul.Ihavemyselfknownpersonswhohaveresolutelymadetheeffort,bututterlyfailed.Theyhavebecomeanxiousabouttheirsoul,andsettoworktoreachthecrossofChristbypersonalself-denial.Theyhavegivenuptheirdifferentpursuitsonebyone;butatlengththeyhavefoundthatnothinghasdonethemanygood.Theyhavebeenjustasfarfromthepeaceofreconciliationastheyp.42werethedaytheybegan.Noneofthesesacrificeshadhelpedthemintheleast.No,andnonecouldhelpthem.Nothingcouldhelpthembutafreejustificationthroughfaith,andfaithalone;andthat,thankGod!atlasttheyhavefoundsufficient.Andsowilleveryotherguiltysinnerwhothrowshimselfinutterhelplessness,tobefreelyforgiven,andfreelysaved,bythegreatgraceofGodinChristJesus.Letnonesuppose,then,thatanysacrificewhichwecanrendercanevermakeuspartakersofthegreatsalvationoncepurchasedbytheonesacrificeoftheLordJesusChrist.Thissalvationisgivenonaltogetherdifferentterms.Itisgivenasafreegifttothosewhocanproducenothing;agiftbestowedinunfetteredmercyonthosewhocanonlysay,inthelanguageofthehymn:—Itfollows,therefore,thatthesubjectoftheministryisonerespectingwhichitisofgreatimportancethatourviewsshouldbescriptural.Andyet,forobviousreasons,itisoneseldompreachedupon.ThegreatobjectoftheservantoftheLordistothrowSelfoutofsight;anditissohardtodisconnecttheofficefromtheofficep.48bearer,thattoolittleisoftensaidabouttheofficefromthefearthattoomuchattentionshouldbedrawntotheman.Itwillbewell,therefore,forustotakethesubjectoftheministryforourcarefulstudythismorning.AndmayGodenablemesotospeak,andyousotohear,thatwemayallreceiveGod’swordinfaith,andmay,together,becompactedasaholypeopleintheLord!

This,then,isthemightyworkofGodinChrist:andthispassageprovesitsnature;andshowsthatitconsists,notinthechangeofdispositionp.53inman,butinthenon-imputationofsinonthepartofGod,— “Towit,thatGodwasinChrist,reconcilingtheworlduntoHimself,notimputingtheirtrespassesuntothem.”Youobservethatthewordsteachthatthereweretrespassesandrealguilt:suchtrespassesthat,iftheywereimputed,orallowedtostandforthecondemnationofthesinner,therecouldbenoreconciliation,andthesinnermustdie.ButGodinChristdoesnotimputeourtrespassesuntous:and,therefore,thebarrierisremoved;andinHimthereiscompletereconciliation.Butwehavenotyetdonewiththesubject;forthequestionarises,HowisitconsistentwiththerighteousnessofGod,thatHeshouldthusnotimputetrespassestothosewhoarereallyguilty?WhathasbecomeofHisgovernment,ifrealguiltisnotreckonedtotherealsinner?Thequestionisansweredinv.21:forwearetheretaughtthatguiltisnotimputedtous,because,inthemarvellouscounselofGod,ithasbeenimputedtotheLordJesusChristinourstead:forlookathiswords,— “ForHehathmadeHimwhoknewnosintobesinforus,thatwemightbemadetherighteousnessofGodinHim.”Thereisnoexplanationofthispassage,exceptthatHewhoknewnosinwasp.54reckonedsinful,inorderthatwe,whoaredeeplysunkinsin,mightbereckonedrighteous.Sinisnotimputedtoman;becausetheLordJesusChristbecameoursubstitute;andithasbeenimputedtoHiminourstead.

THEMASS.

Theycouldnever,therefore,satisfytheconscience;asyouread,Heb;x.1,2:— “Forthelaw,havingashadowofgoodthingstocome,andnottheveryimageofthethings,canneverwiththosesacrificeswhichtheyofferedyearbyyearcontinuallymakethecomersthereuntoperfect.Forthenwouldtheynothaveceasedtobeoffered?becausethattheworshippersoncepurgedshallhavehadnomoreconscienceofsins.”

II.Such,then,isthecontrast;andnowletusturn,inthesecondplace,tothereasonofit.Whywerethoseancientsacrificessooftenrepeated?andwhywasoursonceandforever?Thesamepassagethatbringsoutthecontrastexplainsthereasonofit;andthereasonisthat,p.24inthemselves,theyhavenosavingpower,andthatourshas.Theywereineffectualfortheblottingoutofsin,buttheoneofferingofourBlessedLordwasperfectlyeffectualintheverypointwheretheyfailed.Therewasasgreatacontrastinrespectofefficiencyastherewasinrespectoffrequency;and,infact,therepetitionwastheresultofweakness,astheonenesswastheresultofcompletesufficiency.Thisinsufficiencyisplacedintwopointsofviewinthechapter,forwearetheretaught,first,thatthesesacrificescouldnottakeawaysin,and,secondly,thattheycouldnotsatisfytheconscience.
